Partial Transcript of Public Chat from Nov 9 Webinar Jennifer LaGarde: My 30 nooks were funded by Title I funds. Michelle: Yes. My Kindles go home with the students. ruth soza: I just got a grant from Qwest and AZTea Jennifer LaGarde: Congrats, Ruth! Jo: Michelle, do they come back in good shape? Kelly: Does anyone have e-readers in the school library? JimS: Amazon sharing seems to be between kindle users like nook, but still no support for ePUB/overdrive Michelle: So far but I am just starting. Linn McDonald: Our middle school library is looking at purchasing Kindles for checkout me: Kathy's are in the library Jo: Kathy, did you say, 80 Kindles? michelle: did you buy covers for all of them too? Allison: I believe there are some programs to turn ePub format into Mobi formats for Kindle. me: Yes, she got 80 for use with the whole 8th grade Dee: calibre works well for conversion Jo: she's breaking up Patty: please restate info about the lighting Marsha: I am circulating 6 and hope to get more -- have waiting list. JimS: Since the Overdrive ePUBs are DRM'd I'd be curious if conversion would work Julie Ahern: Do the students sign a waiver or something if the Kindle is checked out and lost or damaged? me: noconversion possible with DRM'd ebooks Traci: Wondering about reading pdf on kindle - ie: Reading series Treasures Patty: thanks! Kelly: @Julie - that's the sort of thing I was wondering too Allison: A light is needed for reading in low light since eInk screens are not backlit Marsha: So far I haven't. At $139 for Kindle and $36 or so for cover, a student who moves with several hardcover books almost reaches that -- or one who checks out books on cd. Michelle: I have the students and parents sign a form before they can be checked out. me: Julie, most schools have kids/parents sign use policies or waivers me: you can read pdf on Kindle me: not the DRM'd kind Jo: Can they all be on the one credit card? Marsha: At SLJ Conference Kathy mentioned she had a policy to share, but I have not been able to get a copy. me: All Kindles can be on one credit card, account MariaK: Are the Kindles in your library catalog? Jo: thanks Gay: would love a copy of the policy students sign!!! Please Marsha: The kindles with content are in my catalog. Linn McDonald: yes the a copy of the policy would be so helpful michelle: there is a copy of one policy on the blog website Currie Renwick: will--will you send a link to your article? me: we will get you the form Kelly: @Marsha, what does that mean about "with content"? Traci: curious about sharing - 6 can share a book at one time - so they can all be on one account and only 6 can read the title if you bought one copy? me: Traci--right Marsha: By content, I mean that all the titles on the Kindle are in the record for the Kindle. Jo: how do we make sure that 6 can share the one book? Kelly: yes MariaK: Thanks! Robin: Kindles are proprietary, right? So can we use Follett ebooks or other ebooks from our vendors? Currie Renwick: More info on cataloging article? MariaK: Sure Allison: @Marsha, yes, all downloaded book titles will stay on that Kindle, or can be archived and downloaded again later - does that help? Patty: Please post article link on the Ning Kelly: I would love a copy of that article, too. Jo: Follett reps just told me know out VEMA andy plemmons: Visity Buffy Hamilton's blog to read more about cataloging kindles http://theunquietlibrari?an.wordpress.com/ Jo: Virginia Ed. Media Assoc Gay: thanks..that would be grat Gay: great me: Currie, yes. email me to remind me JimS: Do people unregister the readers from the credit card once you've loaded it with books? Currie Renwick: thanks-- michelle: here's one policy from the ning - http://edukindle.ning.co?m/forum/topics/kindles-i?n-3rd-grade JimS: to prevent students from buying books from the kindle Allison: I think Jim wants to know how you disable ordering additional books without approval? michelle: I think you can lock them right? JimS: correct Jo: good point Jim Michelle: I unregister from the credit card so they don't order anything when it's checked out. Marsha: I unregister -- no you do not lose them Jo: can't hear again altmant: The newest Nook upgrade has two passwords - one for the library and one for the credit card. I'm very happy about this. Sarah at M-Edge: Michelle and Marsha are correct, you can unregister and keep the existing content on the device jady_marie: I have the Sony eReader. It must be hooked to the computer to get books so the kids can't download titles Marsha: After purchasing I deregister so books are not added. I then reregister when adding more. If students by mistake return to factory setting, we just register and get all the books back. MAP: I've also heard from a librarian who registers to download, unregisters to loan, and then re-registers to download more titles (still keeping the others)??? JimS: thanks Marsha-The other thing we are thinking about is should we disable "sync last page read" since it would probably cause confusion Jo: Is a plane going over or something? Kelly Brannock: sunspots?? Kelly Brannock: keep going Kathy! Marsha: Has anyone used the new color Nook? me: color Nook will ship in a couple of weeks I think... Marsha: I am a high school librarian and don't think it realistic to think the students will keep wireless off. altmant: Yes! It's amazing - I got my hands on one last week with our B&N School Liason. me: cool! me: how is the touch screen? Kelly Brannock: wow! altmant: Very responsive - definitely will need screen protectors - :) me: like the iPad? Allison: @Jim, this is a good question to verify with Amazon's Kindle support team if you can't get an answer here. This may cause confusion so best to confirm. altmant: Very similar. Jo: Amazon replaced damaged Kindles? me: yes Jo: wow! Jo: wow, 2! Jo: she could say it backwards! Jo: wow Marsha: Is Amazon allowing purchase of more than 5 Kindles at a time now? Linn McDonald: does that (replacement) require an additional warranty or was this within a standard warranty period? Allison: Amazon has a 1 year warranty policy for the Kindle best to look into their warranty when purchasing Linn McDonald: SquareTrade offers great warranties for electronic devices Jo: That was answered wasn't it? Michelle: You don't deregister the kindle, you just take the credit card info out to stop 1 touch ordering. me: thanks Michelle me: Linn, how did you find the Sq Trade deal? Jo: So, you keep funds back for that purpose? Linn McDonald: Will, here's the link: http://www.squaretrade.c?om/pages/ereader?ccode=b?s_war_buyerblog me: thanks Virginiareader: Is it important to order the 3G Kindle as opposed to the less expensive one? Marsha: How do you name the owners of the Kindle? Librarian 1 Librarian 2 or whatever? Linn McDonald: I personally do not think we will need a 3G model Linn McDonald: libraries, no 3G (IMO) but for personal use, 3G would be nice JimS: Anyone using the Cellular kindle/NOOKs getting questions from Admins over the school's unfiltered web access? Michelle: Linn- I agree. Personal 3G for students wireless. JimS: ..meant to say "getting around the schools filtered web access" Traci: would the 3G be in violation of CIPA? michelle: it's really not great for internet browsing. me: interesting question Traci, Jim JimS: re cipa--we had the same question, so are advocating wifi only Traci: That is what I was thinking - you need the filters probably me: right, no filters with 3G Kelly: re: CIPA & wifi - I hadn't even considered that. Linn McDonald: Yes, I attended that webinar, Kathy, and it was fun and informative Kelly Brannock: the eBooks Summit was great! Jo: Will, will you send us these slides, too? me: sure, Jo! Helen: Is the eBook summit archived or accessible? Marsha: If the kids check out the wifi, they are unfiltered. me: Helen, check with Kathy but I think some of it is available Mag: Since we are always told to spend the money when you have it...could you buy amazon gift cards if you aren't sure of the titles you want to purchase yet? Linn McDonald: Will, your site has been so helpful Jo: If they take notes, can we download those and save them? me: thanks, Linn! Jo: My name is REAL short Jo: should be light me: Robin Sowder winds!!!!! Jo: winds? Gay: must be present Robin: I'm here!!!! Jo: congrats Robin Julie Ahern: Way to go Robin!! Kelly Brannock: yay, Robin!! Kelly: lucky lady! Patty: Congrats Linn McDonald: congrats, Robin! Allison: You can load Amazon gift cards onto the purchasing account in lieu of a credit card Robin: That's meeeeeeee! Gay: congrats! Robin: Thank you!!!! Jo: I have had one! Sarah at M-Edge: Yay Robin! Jo: It was easy Jo: and a great gift Linn McDonald: what I do like about Nook is that you can use a purchase order for books Jo: no, the gift card has a number and you enter it Marsha: Can you buy a rechargable credit card? Using the gift cards has been a pain. Allison: Lots of Kindlers use gift cards to limit their spending! Keeps them in check! MAP: IThe Amazon guy told me you could buy gift cards when you buy Kindles with a P..O Allison: You're welcome! Jo: great idea Allison -- I may have to do that for mine Robin: Thank you. Thanks to this ning I have been fielding lots of questions about ereaders for my teachers. Many are interested in this technology. I'm anxious to see all the links that will follow this webinar. Patty: I'm a newbie, and not sure of the de-register / resister debate. I just turned off 1 click buying and removed the credit card from the account. I'll reacivate the credit card when I want to order more titles. We're using ours mainly as "read only" and not encouaraging kids to download titles. Do you see a problem with this plan? michelle: can you post the power point on the ning so I can get the suggested links. I only got to copy 2 of the 4. me: I think that works, Patty--anyone else? Mag: any information about purchasing kindles from amazon vs. a retail store (like stapeles)? jady_marie: How do you choose what titles to put on the Kindles....books that will stand the test of time or just what is current? Linn McDonald: Patty, your strategy seems like a great way to start a program, and it makes it more manageable Sarah at M-Edge: @michelle, we will be sending out the slides to everyone so you can get all the info! michelle: great thanks! Allison: Kathy ordered with a corporate account with Amazon and replacing Kindles is very easy when ordering directly with Amazon. Traci: Thanks for sending the slides Jo: Bless your heart! MAP: What about individual student requests for a title? Jo: Oh, and Sarah, I love my cover, too Jo: What was Patty's strategy? Jo: I missed it jady_marie: I was able to get five Sarah at M-Edge: @Jo YAY! We're glad you love it! jady_marie: Is the Target grant for anyone Currie Renwick: How do you choose which students in a particular class get to use the Kindles? Do you ever need to set a time limit?! Allison: @Patty - that sounds like a good approach! Michelle: I got enough Kindles for all of my resource students to use one all year so I don't have to choose or limit it. Linn McDonald: I'm going to start off with an eReader book club, a few chosen good readers, to get our feet wet. MariaK: I don't know if you addressed this...What is the advantage of Kindles over actual books? In the case a book club or reading group for example. MAP: Thanks, all--look forward to more of these webinars ...uh, without the technical glitches, of course. Bye Sarah at M-Edge: We'll work on that MAP! Allison: Kathy, are any of the teachers creating pdf files of discussion book questions so students can download onto their Kindles? Jo: Maria, one advantage I think is the text to voice Marsha: Anecdotal info is the kids read more because when they finish one book, there are others readily available. Also they (without prompting) use the dictionary. Allison: @MariaK - most ereaders also allow you to change the font sizes, which may be helpful for special education needs Linn McDonald: Wow, the December 7th event looks great - I'll attend for sure Jo: can't wait for that day that will live in infamy Diane: Like the sound of both of the upcoming events. MariaK: @Jo, Marsha, Allison: I see...I'm thinking about potential public library applications. Traci: December 7 sounds like a great session Dee: calibre converts pdf from pdf to mobi Kelly Brannock: thanks Will & Kathy - great session! Jo: I agree with Kelly Kelly: Thanks for the session - I look forward to more. Jo: I learned SO much! Michelle: Wonderful info. Thanks for everything. Allison: @MariaK - the large font feature might really be liked in a public library setting since larger print books are limited in selection Linn McDonald: Thanks, Will and Kathy altmant: Thanks Will and Kathy. Currie Renwick: Thanks so much for the great information! michelle: Thanks so much! Amanda: Thank you! Patty: Thanks for an informative session! jady_marie: Are there libraries online that loan books to the ereaders? Allison: Thank you Will and Kathy! Diane: Looking forward to more info! Thanks for putting it on. Dee: thanks - great session, lots of helpful info :) Julie Ahern: Lots of great homework to do -thanks for tonight's session. jady_marie: Thank you!!! Virginiareader: Thanks very much - got lots of good ideas! Bhadra Chandran: T hanks, a lot Jo: I'm really new to this Amanda: Tech happens! Traci: Thank you Will and Kathy Kelly Brannock: looking forward to the upcoming sessions too! Denise: Thanks Will and Kathy. It was a great session. Looking forward to the next session.
