Good Shots from 2009 Reliant Park Dog Shows
Included in this issue are many photos from the July dog shows at Reliant Center. Wilson the Pub competed in Agility. 3-Legged Millie collected donations for Springer Spaniel Rescue. Westminster Best of Show Dog Stump made a personal appearance. At the PAWS booth, kids freaked out over the Malamutes. Flyball, Freestyle and Frisbee-catching were a big part of the show that we couldn't capture with our little camera and skill. However, Jeff Balke took some great action shots. See them on Flicker: www.flickr.com/photos/jeffbalke/tags/reliantcenter/. Support 2 Dogs on a 2000 Mile Journey for Cancer Prevention
Luke Robinson of Austin, TX has walked over 1000 miles with two Great Pyranees to raise awareness of cancer prevention among canines. You can follow their progress at their blog, www.2dogs2000miles.blogspot.com, learn more and make a contribution at their web site, www.2dogs2000miles.org. Says Luke, "We can discover the cause of canine cancer. After walking over 1000 miles thus far and meeting many thought leaders in veterinary oncology we're beginning to understand the challenges we face off the road to achieve that goal." Most Convenient Way to Want a charming photo of your adoptee to sit on your desk without all the burdens of animal ownership? Donate through the Houston Zoo Adopt an Animal program. "Get the inside scoop on your animal's life story, favorite treats, and more! Your adoption will last one year and includes a photo of the animal and a certificate of your adoption." www.HoustonZoo.org/adopt/
A story in The UK Telegraph reports that one of two collie strays found on the side of the road near Loddon, Norfolk is blind. They planned to re-home 'Bonnie and Clyde' together. "If Clyde's unsure where he is he will suddenly go behind her and put his face on her back so she can guide him where he is going. He totally relies on her the whole time. When she walks she tends to stop and make sure he's there - she does look out for him. When Bonnie's about you wouldn't necessarily notice Clyde is blind, but when she's not about he refuses to move without her." These Animals Attack Pets From the blog at PetWellBeing.com: "Our pets have many predators, some of which we don't know even think about. Below is a list of the top 10 animal attackers on pets across the USA, according to Veterinary Pet Insurance Company." In order of incidence: snakes, coyotes, raccoons, squirrels, scorpions, javalinas, porcupines, groundhogs, skunks and rats. How to Cure Bridget Pilloud (www.PetsAreTalking.com) has recorded a great 5-minute video on dealing with mean little dogs. See www.blip.tv/file/2371026/. If you encounter one: pet it on the shoulder, not the head and avoid eye contact. Treat them like dogs, not children, and listen to them. Dogs, Prisoners Both of Service The Puppies Behind Bars Program (PuppiesBehindBars.com) made a big splash in the media this summer with stories on CNN, NPR, and ABC News, and Oprah. Prison inmates are recruited to foster and train service dogs to become either guides or detectives. The most ground-breaking part of this program has been its provision of guide dogs to disabled veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorders. Listen to Marine Paul Bang-Knudsen's story at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=111806582. Cat Talk: Feed me now Scientist, aggravated by annoying cat, discovers cats know how to push your buttons. (Next up, proof that cats like to sleep on your stuff!) LiveScience.com: Cats Do Control Humans, Study Finds by LiveScience Staff, 13 July 2009: "Household cats exercise this control with a certain type of urgent-sounding, high-pitched meow [mixed with a purr], according to the findings..... The study showed that humans find these mixed calls annoying and difficult to ignore." Rabbits Out of the Cage On the Pet Connection blog, Christie Keith interviews Jennifer Lee, who agreed to take care of a friend's rabbit, then went out and adopted three of her own. "Anyone who thinks rabbits are boring pets should see mine," Lee laughed. "Every night they follow me up three flights of stairs, and sleep under my bed." According to Keith, "Rabbits, it turns out, don't do very well when they're left alone in a cage or backyard hutch. They're bored.... But once you bring them out of the cage... They hop around, investigate things and love to play with toys. You can even train them [with] a clicker." Learn more about rabbit toys at www.Squidoo.com/Homemade_Rabbit_Toys |
