Jenga. It's a board game, interactive puzzle and social experiment. You take these funny little wooden blocks and try to stack them one on top of another. Of course, the higher you go, the greater the likelihood of a total collapse, an architectural debacle, an acute failure of society. In a way, it is interesting. Unlike other board games, it is not about individual success or even collective progress. Rather, it is about working towards a common goal, while avoiding hurry or folly, for even the slightest error can come back to haunt you and collapse all of your efforts later on. Now that I think of it, it is a board-less board game, an interesting concept and metaphor waiting to be created. Jenga's a nice name. It reflects my personality, and basically entire life. Unfortunately, it's not nearly as nice on the college diploma I never got or the resumé which is always rejected. So, I've taken up the name Katherine. No offense to all the Katherines out there, I'm sure it's a lovely name, but for someone who's been Jenga for twenty years, it's boring. It's flat, platitudinous and too status quo. Kind of like a board game with a board. And I haven't been called Jenga in a while, which starts to hurt. I mean, I can't really go up to anyone and say, “Hey, my name is Katherine, but you can call me Jenga!” I'd gain a lot more weird stares than respect. However, I do owe Katherine something, because it's the name that got me into that crazy mix-up which landed me in the New York Peep store, which is really how I ended up on Nerdfighteria, which is kind of where the beginning of the rest of my life sort of happened. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jenga: I'm Jenga. Dorian: Dorian. Jenga: Dorian? What kinda name is Dorian? Dorian: I don't know, I guess my parents just liked Oscar Wilde.* What kinda name is Jenga? Jenga: I don't know, I guess my parents just liked board games. Dorian: Jenga doesn't have a board. Jenga: True. I am named after a board-less board game. I kinda like the sound of that. Dorian: As do I. It sounds like it should be a metaphor for something. Jenga: So why did you decide to move to Nerdfighteria Island? Dorian: Do you want the long or the short answer? Jenga: The short answer I guess, is there much of a difference? Dorian: Of course! While the short answer gets to the crux of the reason it leaves out all the emotional journey. Jenga: Emotional journey? Bullshit! Dorian: No really, maybe you're asking the wrong question. It isn't important why I moved to the Island, what is important is why I looked for it in the first place. Jenga: Jeez Dorian, stop with the psychology crap!
